As you can see the children access a wide range of activities, they help with the planning and implementing of the days' events, the wide age range works well with the older children finding time to help and look after the younger ones. Activities are adapted to individual children's abilities and needs.
The atmosphere is really relaxed in our Holiday Club, allowing the children to have some quality chilled time while parents/carers are at work or having a well-deserved rest!
I thought I had the work-life balance sorted out.
I am a mother of two wonderful children aged 6 and 3. I consider myself very fortunate indeed. I am employed on a sessional basis and am also a community volunteer. This means that apart from the odd training day, I can be seen standing smugly at the school gate, secure in the knowledge that tea has been prepared, the house is reasonably ordered and the clutter free dining table awaits the predictable daily homework battle.
My complacency was shattered in the form of a question from my daughter. It wasn’t “Why can’t we go to Disneyland Mummy?” or “Why can’t we have a pony?” or “Why can’t we have a house with stairs?” (Alice equates wealth with stairs – we live in a bungalow). It was in fact “WHY CAN’T I GO TO AFTER SCHOOL CLUB LIKE ALL MY FRIENDS!?”
Alice has been attending once a week now, it has been nearly a year since she dropped that bombshell. Other reasons for enjoying the club are many and varied – she has made friends with older girls whom she would not normally mix with, she enjoys playing on the computer in their IT suite, not to mention the art and craft activities, the preparation and serving of snacks and supervised outdoor play. In fact, she spent several rainy days over the summer at the Holiday Club, which had a diverse and interesting programme of activities.
I am delighted to have watched her grow in confidence and proud of her independence whilst safe in the knowledge that she is happy with her friends and a staff team that she clearly adores.
So, in anticipation of our wonderful British weather, I have booked two full days for her over the half term – one for me to go Christmas shopping, the other to update my CV n the quest for a steady regular income to pay for an extra session at After School Club!
